A gunman assaulted a lunch reception at a Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods, killing one person and injuring five others Sunday before congregants tackled him, hogtied him with an extension cable, and got his two weapons, authorities claimed.
"That team of worshipers displayed what we believe is outstanding heroism and fearlessness," Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said, later on adding, "It's risk-free to claim that had they not interfered, this scenario could have been much worse."
The physical violence left the south Orange Region suburban area-- home to the sprawling retirement home once referred to as Recreation World-- reeling and in grief, coming a day after a racist assault at a Buffalo, N.Y., grocery store left 10 dead.
Gunfire rang out at 1:26 p.m. inside Geneva Presbyterian Church in the 24000 block of El Toro Road. Between 30 and 40 congregants were going to the reception after morning worship. A police resource claimed the shooter had secured the doors to stop getting away.
