More than half of female users think about beauty interventions such as injected lips and Botox.
It is well known that the use of social media has a significant impact on the psyche. But now a new report shows that the popular platforms TikTok and Snapchat, in particular, are making users feel significantly worse - and even young women are resorting to Botox.
The results of the Beauty Report 2022 show that female users, in particular, who are on social media every day, rate their self-confidence, body image, and psychological well-being as very low. Female users of TikTok and Snapchat are particularly affected. On a scale of 1 to 10, TikTok users rated their psychological well-being at just 6.2 - the lowest of all the media surveyed. In addition, Snapchat and TikTok users scored only 6.4 and 6.5, respectively, for body awareness. By comparison, those who don't use social media at all score an average of 7.7 here.
It is also striking that the longer the respondents use social media, the lower their well-being. Shocking - because both Snapchat and TikTok are used primarily by young women and girls!
More than half of female users think about lip fillers and Botox.
As a result, more and more young women want to live up to an ideal of beauty propagated on social networks at all costs. To do so, they even accept "minor" beauty interventions. The study found that more than half of the female users of Snapchat and TikTok have already had so-called "minimally invasive" procedures or have at least thought about them. These procedures include injected lips using "fillers" and the neurotoxin Botox.
The main reasons for beauty interventions are dissatisfaction with their bodies (70 percent) and a lack of self-confidence (56 percent). However, the enormous pressure from outside should not be underestimated: Wanting to please someone else (30 percent), comparison with role models (28 percent), and social anxiety (22 percent) also play a role in the decision to have a beauty procedure.
