After a special session in Brussels, the EU Parliament called for Ukraine's status as an EU accession candidate. In Tuesday's non-binding resolution, MEPs called on the European institutions to "work towards the country being granted EU candidate status." Until this has happened, work should continue towards the "integration of Ukraine into the Union's internal market."
Given the war in Ukraine, MEPs had called a special session. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj added a video and called on the EU to give his country "equal" membership. "We are fighting for our survival, and that is the highest motivation. But we also want to be equal members in Europe," said Zelenskyj.
A unanimous decision by the 27 member states would be required to grant Ukraine candidate status. EU Council President Charles Michel spoke to the parliamentarians of a "symbolic and legitimate request" from Ukraine. However, he also said that it was "a difficult subject." On Monday, Michel had already pointed out that there was not the necessary unanimity among the EU countries to open accession negotiations.
