Robbery attack on a jeweler - however, no jewelry was stolen, but the rich and famous customer data.
London jewelry company Graff became the victim of a hacker attack. The criminals gained access to the personal data of Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, and other celebrities.
"Mail on Sunday" reports that 69,000 confidential documents of the luxury company ended up on the darknet, including customer lists, invoices, receipts, and credit notes. For one or the other, it could become embarrassing - if, for example, jewelry was bought for secret lovers or accepted as a bribe.
Among the victims are celebrities such as ex-footballer Frank Lampard, Formula 1 heiress Tamara Ecclestone and Hollywood stars Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, and Alec Baldwin. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Bahrain's Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa are the company's customers.
The Russian hacker group Conti is believed to be behind the data theft. According to reports, cybercriminals are demanding several million in ransom and threatening to release more documents. Experts believe that payment is required in a cryptocurrency or jewels.
The jewelry company Graff (450 million British pounds in sales in 2019) has informed those whose personal data may have been accessed. "We were alerted to the attack by our security systems, so we were able to respond quickly and shut down our network," a spokesperson told the Mail on Sunday.
In that short time, the criminals made fat loot. The information already published, which concerns more than 11,000 customers, is said to be only one percent of the stolen data.
