Songcraft and style take center stage on four new must-hear releases. Artist: Pete Yorn Title: Hawaii (Shelly Music) You might like if you enjoy: Pete Yorn, The Postal Service, R.E.M. Tell me more: Pete Yorn is back with another fantastic batch of tuneful and enticing folk rock originals via Hawaii. Co-produced by Yorn with Jackson Phillips, the 10-track album is a phenomenal return for the New Jersey native. Standouts include the driving melodic opener “Elizabeth Taylor,” sweeping “Never Go” with its burgeoning melodic build, wistful “’Til The End,” shimmering dream pop gem “Also Roses” and luxurious closer “Stay Away.” The piano-anchored “Ransom” is particularly affecting, Yorn’s yearning vocals capturing his emotional pain on one of the disc’s high points. Artist: Linda Hoover Title: I Mean To Shine (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Nicolette Larson, Crosby Stills & Nash Tell me more: More than 50 years after Linda Hoover’s debut album was recorded in the summer of 1970, the impressive album is finally receiving its commercial release in 2022 (an exclusive vinyl edition was issued on June 18; the audio CD and digital versions are coming June 24). Hoover was only 19 when she cut the album, but the ambitious young singersongwriter was assisted by first-time producer Gary Katz and a rising songwriting and arranging duo by the name of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (who would soon find fame leading Steely Dan). Not only were four of the album’s tracks penned by Becker and Fagen, but future Steely Dan members Denny Dias and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter were among the players on the recordings.

Hoover has a beautiful voice that resonates with the diverse material ranging from ‘70s pop (“I Mean to Shine,” “Turn My Friend Away”) and uptempo folk rock (“Roll Back the Meaning,” “City Mug”) to affecting acoustic ballads (“Autumn,” “Jones”). The genre-defying “Roaring of the Lamb” and Stephen Stillspenned “4 + 20” are especially poignant. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Widely Popular Banda Cuisillos to Perform at Morongo The Mexican Banda, known for its eccentric costumes and dance-worthy rhythms, will grace the stage in the Grand Ballroom on July 8

By Desert Star Staff Morongo Casino Resort & Spa – The popular group Banda Cuisillos will bring its catchy rhythms and beautiful ballads to the Morongo Grand Ballroom stage on Friday, July 8. The band has released 36 albums since its formation in 1989, including several that reached gold or double-gold status. Originally known as “Banda Cuisillos Musical de Arturo Macías,” the group’s style has evolved considerably over the last 30 years—moving from Colombia-infused “cumbias” to more romantic ballads. Unlike most brass bands, they incorporate a piano and electric guitar into their music. Banda Cuisillos became instantly popular following the group’s first album in 1989, “Tengo Mi Novia en Cuisillos,” and even more

so in 1996 when the band reached gold status for the first time with the release of “Como Sufro.” Since then, the band has released several other gold status albums and has collaborated with Latin Grammy-nominated musician and composer Espinoza Paz. One of the more notable attributes of Banda Cuisillos is the group’s use of Native American regalia, which is meant to honor members’ cultural and ethnic heritage. Though the band originated in Jalisco, Mexico, members identify with the regalia and its rich cultural significance. “Banda Cuisillos has been delivering melodic cumbias, charangas, and romantic ballads since teenage clarinetist Arturo Macías formed the 20-member collective back in 1987,” said Simon Farmer, Morongo’s Executive Director of Marketing. “Their for banda fans or those Tickets are available performances are legendary looking to explore the genre.” for $39, $49 and $59 from June 22, 2022

Lessons From Modern Capitalism’s Birthplace…Amsterdam By Janice Gough Amsterdam. Holland is a vibrant and remarkable modern city with amazing historical roots. Most people who think of Amsterdam’s history think of the great art masters, like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh and the beauty of tulips. The fantastic thing about Amsterdam is how the modern stock exchange began here. The year was 1602. Dutch traders were already making fortunes bringing over spices from Asia to Europe. in the day, folks in Europe would pay a fortune for it. And maybe the Dutch traders were the first to say, “The spice must flow.” They also traded textiles, gems, you name it! The Dutch did much of this trading with the Portuguese and wanted to cut out the middleman. At the same time, Holland was struggling against oppressive Spanish rule, So how do you pay for a war? Capitalism! The Dutch came with this great idea — the Dutch East India Company, abbreviated in their own language as VOC. Public stock trading began shortly afterward, and it became the first multinational corporation. The VOC was vital to financing Holland’s fight against Spain. And its stock was so popular that the Dutch built a place where people could come and trade stock at regular hours and not just by appointment. This is how stock markets began. The Dutch were financial pioneers. They also created public bond floats, stock options and more. And all this was based on the commodities trade. Anywhere the Dutch merchants sailed, towns sprang up, financial systems started, mines began, and jobs were created. So, naturally, this made the Dutch very popular. The stock market became even more popular because it

allowed investors to share risk and return. Anyone could buy a small share of the cargoes sailing between the spice islands and Europe. Profits were shared, and losses were manageable. This turned into the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (AMX), which is now part of Euronext. I got to visit the bull in front of the AMX during my visit years ago. The Dutch have a bull in front of their stock exchange, just like the one down the street from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). That bull is The Charging Bull and was initially placed there in secret, in 1989, by Italian-American artist Arturo Di Modica. This was when the world was reeling from the 1987 Black Monday stock market collapse, and being a creative artist, Di Modica wanted to give the world Hope after such a financial disaster. I think it worked. Di Modica did the same outside the AMX in 2012 amid Europe’s financial crisis. It did, pr hope. It did provide hope. People rub the bull’s horns for luck so often that they’ve changed color! Funny correlation, right? Well, it makes perfect sense ... The Dutch founded New York, calling it New Amsterdam, but that changed when English settlers took over. But first, in the 1600s, Dutch settlers erected a wall on the southern tip of Manhattan Island to keep the British out.

It did not work, and the wall was never used for defense. But it gave its name to a street in Manhattan: Wall Street. And that’s where colonists gathered to trade stocks and commodities. So, the Dutch helped give us Wall Street, too! The Dutch gained a reputation for many things ... financial acumen was a big one, but they’re also known for tolerance and welcoming refugees. Over the years, this has taken Amsterdam’s already busy economic activity and kicked it into overdrive and a new Fronteer. Record numbers of foreign businesses open offices in the Netherlands, too. That’s why the Netherlands is ranked 69th in the world in terms of population but 17th in economic size. All this from a place that was basically reclaimed swampland several hundred years ago. The Dutch are also known for sharing wealth and looking after the less fortunate. In other words, they’re capitalists, but they’re not jerks about it. A robust social safety net allows people to start new businesses more readily. And indeed, Holland leads Europe in new business starts. So, what can we learn from the Netherlands and its first-of-its-kind stock market? 1. Financial innovation is good. Before the Dutch did, no one had imagined a stock market with regular hours and open-to-all access. It

also helped them fund their major problem of the day: paying for war against Spain. 2. Tolerance and openness help capital grow. Amsterdam is a great place to do business, and foreigners are welcome. That sure kicks an economy into a higher gear. 3. Share the wealth, share the risk. The Dutch make sure to spread the wealth around. Taxes are higher than in the U.S., but services are top-notch. And the safety net gives budding entrepreneurs the confidence to start new businesses. It’s appearing more and more likely that the historic bull market we’ve all enjoyed for over a decade is out of steam. Meanwhile, we have a threshold from a world of stability to a world on the brink of chaos. The biggest threat could be to your wealth. This could also be a time of growing your wealth or a time of loss. It is a time to be tax-efficient and budget efficient, so one can invest a portion of their portfolio in working for their prosperity. HOROSCOPES ARIES

During this halfway mark of the year, you have cultivated enough inner strength and energy to meet all the expectations and demands of work, both self-imposed and from others. You have developed new abilities which may seem unusual – detail, order and organization. These you may also demand from others as well. But be careful. They don’t have your same astrological chart. Everyone comes forth with their strengths and abilities at different times.

TAURUS It’s time to be practical and grounded, anchored and present. It’s time to come home now, from either far away or to simply focus on where you live in order to bring order and organization to your environments. It’s been a long long time (years?) since you’ve been able to assess needs in your personal life. Since you’re been looking outward, saving the world and tending to others, things at home could be quite in need of attention. Seeking assistance is both sensible and practical.

GEMINI Consider yourself seriously for a while. Allow yourself to think of all the things you need in all aspects of your life. Consider your values and resources. Consider the state of your home and family, your relationships and money, your communication and sense

of well-being. Are all these as they should be? And do you bring comfort, calmness, nurturance and ease to others? Assess these questions quietly over time. Allow all feelings to be acknowledged should they appear. Each feeling holds a message.

CANCER You always wonder what is the truth of the matter in all situations. You are very intuitive. And so it’s good to assess and glean the truth from your feelings and senses. Then it is good to share with others what it is you feel and sense about everything, even themselves. When we speak the truth, a clarity results, a trust is able to enter every relationship. When speaking the truth, we must be neutral, ask questions, be kind and courteous. Truth sets everyone free.

LEO Leos, when coming from the heart can be very loving. This is the best way to be a leader. Leos always apply their creative endeavors to daily life. I have a question. Would you like to be doing something different in your life where you are out and about in the wilds? Doing something that serves the animal (bird or fish) kingdom, offering food, shelter, medicine and comfort? What is of comfort to you? Each one of us aligns with and nurtures one kingdom in particular. Which kingdom is for you?

Solar Installations By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL I live in a planned development, and was told we could not install solar because it would void our roof warranties. Can our management company ban installation of solar because of that reason or do the new regulations override that argument? Thank you. D.D., Cypress Dear D.D.: Civil Code Sections 714 and 714.1 do not provide for HOAs to ban solar installations because they allegedly void roof warranties. However, keep in mind that the HOA can hold you responsible for damage to the roof. So, the HOA cannot reject your solar installation request because of the roof warranty, but it may hold you responsible for damage to the roof. Also, management doesn’t make decisions, they carry out board decisions. Best regards, Kelly.

Hi, Kelly. I applied for installation of a solar system. My HOA requires installation of pigeon deterrents or critter guards, at a cost of well over $1,000 extra. We think that ”pigeon deterrent” should be at owner’s option and cost and the HOA shouldn’t make it compulsory for approval. Please advise when the installation of pigeon deterrent becomes a condition for solar installation. What kind of procedure does the HOA follow to set it as a condition for solar installation? J.M., San Jose Dear J.M.: Per Civil Code Section 714(d)(1)(B), an association cannot impose a requirement which adds more than $1,000 cost to the system. However, the HOA can hold you responsible for damage to the roof if the installation allows pigeons or other animals to damage the roof, per Civil Code Section 714.1(a)(4). Even though the HOA cannot force you to have the guards, if it prevents damage to the roof

You seem to have new levels of vital and sustaining energy. Perhaps it’s under the summer sun. You’re active with a new level of self-confidence. You seem happy and enthusiastic (filled with God) and busy with various tasks. Does it seem there’s no time for relaxation? When you’re not working night and day, count your resources and blessings. Should any concerns arise, remember the statement, “Don’t’ worry, be happy.” The “happy” helps bring the resources closer to you.

LIBRA As you allow for more time for contemplation, recreation, play and rest, a spiritual essence begins to slowly permeate your daily life. This is good. It helps alleviate judgments and criticisms you may be carrying since childhood. Those judgments pervade your present life and although you may think you’re happy, if judgments about others persist, they are eventually projected upon all those around you. Even the best of relationships is affected. There is such a thing as forgiveness. It releases us in the same way truth does. Forgiveness offers us freedom.

SCORPIO What changes, variations, fluctuations and adjustments (they may feel like revolutions) are appearing in your daily life? What expansion is also simultaneously occurring? What new direction is being taken along with your new sense of self-identity? All these equal

(which damage will likely be your responsibility), it might be a good idea to include it anyway. Sincerely, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: As per CC&Rs, we do not own our own roofs in our complex. Does the law force us to allow solar installation? R.T., Torrance. Dear R.T.: Civil Code Section 4746 provides guidance regarding installation of common area roofs. The HOA cannot deny solar installations because they would be on common area roofs, but homeowners can be required to procure and submit a “solar site survey” documenting that the installation will only use a fair share of the useable roof area. a shift in focus and activities. Everything’s changing for you. It’s not just your perception. Things you’ve waited for eventually appear. Now all you have to do is begin to organize it all without feeling overwhelmed. In time, with your participation, all will fall into place.

SAGITTARIUS Remember to also do your work with composure and inner poise, exhibiting no pressure toward self or others. You are being called to create and exhibit Right Relations with everyone, balancing leadership with friendship, keeping the two separate with finesse, elegance, grace and skill. This is quite a job. You most likely already display all of this. Now more is called for. In all areas of life bring forth Goodwill. Then you pass all the tests of discipleship.

CAPRICORN Many days, weeks and months of work reach a summit. If you look back on the autumn of last year, you began a new endeavor or something new was brought to light in your creative life. Now it has reached a point of manifestation, of being seen in the world. Perhaps this is you - always in a state of creative transformation and transfiguration. There are perhaps plans concerning travel, somewhere far away, experiencing another culture, foods, people? There’s a place for you as you meet the needs of another.

Tend to money carefully. Put money away for future needs. Here is how to use one’s money. Tithe first. Save second. Pay bills third. Pay for things needed fourth. Always tithe first. Why? This assures you a constant supply in terms of your life needs. When we give, more is returned to us. This is a universal law. Humanity has yet to learn this law of tithing. The new materialism is the sharing society. You can be a leader for humanity in this endeavor. In the meantime, carefully tend and care for your health.

PISCES You find the need to shift and change your usual daily agendas. What you have done in the past is less and less of interest. You shift between work and rest. Focus more on the rest aspect. Both can be felt as extremes. It’s important to find the way in between, the point of poise. This can be felt as a “razor’s edge.” And it is. A crossroads is coming up. A decision, too. You need sensitive handling. Tend to yourself, your health, your money, values and resources with tender loving care. the roofs are usually common area but the area fairly allocable to the owner is clear – the roof above their own residence. In an apartment-style building, in which condominium units are stacked in multiple stories, the available roof space is more scarce. In that configuration the solar site survey may reveal that the requesting party’s fair share of the roof is too small for a meaningful amount of solar panels to be installed. So, as a technical matter, yes, the law forces HOAs to allow solar installations, subject to important conditions, but as a practical matter it is more likely that apartment-style condominium projects the unit owners will not find it as valuable. Given that townhouse condominium owners can use

the area over their home as their “fair share” of the common area roofs, it is more likely that the HOA will be forced to allow solar installations on townhouses. Behavioral Health Tips for Older Adults By Desert Star Staff According to experts, older adults experience behavioral health issues such as anxiety or depression. They May be embarrassed and think they need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps,” but helping them seek help can empower them to live their best lives. “Everyone is different, but there are tools for better health, including therapy, medication and self-care,” said Dr. Lindsay Evans-Mitchell, medical director for behavioral health for Cigna Medicare Advantage. Behavioral health disorders affect one in five adults over 55. Older men have the highest suicide rate of any age group or gender. Among men 75 and older, the suicide rate is 40.2 per 100,000 – almost triple the overall rate. The most common behavioral health disorder in older adults is dementia, and its incidence is growing as the Baby Boomer generation ages. Experts project that more than 9 million Americans 65 years or older will have dementia by 2030. Anxiety disorders and mood disorders are also common among older people. Dealing with a behavioral health issue? These selfcare tips can help: 1. Find a Provider. “Cognitive disorders, such as

dementia and mood disorders, often look the same,” Dr. Evans-Mitchell said. “Only a trained professional can make an accurate diagnosis.” For help finding a provider, reach out to your primary care physician or health plans, such as Medicare or Medicare Advantage. Also, consider virtual therapy. It’s easy to schedule and offers the convenience of seeing a therapist without leaving home. 2. Nurture Yourself. Good nutrition feeds the body and mind. If you have questions about food for older adults, consult your physician or a registered dietitian. Additionally, drink water throughout the day. “Dehydration can worsen cognitive issues,” Dr. Evans-Mitchell said. 3. Sleep Well. Like all adults, older people need nightly seven to nine hours of sleep. However, Dr. EvansMitchell noted that older people’s tendency to go to bed early, wake up early, and nap throughout the day can disrupt healthy sleep cycles and limit rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, potentially contributing to behavioral health issues. 4. Exercise. Even moderate exercise can improve mental and physical health. For example, the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans

describe benefits such as improved brain health, better cognitive function, and reduced anxiety and mood disorders risk. People who exercise also tend to sleep better. Have trouble getting started? Some Medicare Advantage plans include a fitness benefit, which can pay for a gym membership or provide at-home fitness tools. 5. Head Outside. Outside has numerous benefits, including vitamin D absorption needed for cognitive health. Additionally, research has shown that chemicals released

from trees can stimulate brain functions. Don’t forget the sunscreen, though, as skin cancer is most common in people older than 65. 6. Buddy Up. Papa, available through some Cigna Medicare Advantage plans, connects older adults and their families with “Papa Pals” for companionship and support. “Papa Pals” can provide transportation, help with everyday tasks -- or simply be a friend, doing activities like watching movies or playing games. 7. Parent a Pet. Caring

for pets generates positive emotions and can reduce anxiety. Petting a dog has been shown to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and pets provide a bond that can elevate two feel-good brain chemicals: oxytocin and dopamine. Dogs also encourage people to exercise outdoors. “Behavioral health issues can be complex and confusing to navigate, but taking positive actions can be empowering,” Dr. Evans-Mitchell said. “It’s never too late to make a new start.” StatePoint

Offshore-Wind Backers Press State to Stop Issuing Fossil-Fuel Permits

By Suzanne Potter/PNS Local elected officials are calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to halt all permitting for future oil and gas projects in light of recent progress with offshore wind. The feds are getting ready to hold a lease auction in August or September for sites off Morro Bay to build floating wind turbines. Andy Pease, a member of the San Luis Obispo city council, said the potential for offshore wind on the Central Coast and Humboldt County is huge; enough to power 1.6 million homes. “There’s no reason to be having new gas extraction permits or any fossil fuels,” Pease contended. “We need to leave those in the ground. We’ve got the capability. Let’s make it happen.” Newsom has already pledged to cease all fracking permits by 2024. Groups fighting climate change would like him to take the next step and block any oil drilling expansion. Opponents want oil and gas to remain part of the energy mix and say jobs in the field are at risk. John Headding, mayor of Morro Bay, said the floating offshore turbines would take at least six years to come to fruition because the www.desertstarweekly.com

Local LA Women Win Grants from Grape-Nuts to Climb Everest By Desert Star Staff Local LA women Meghan Buchanan and Sara Safari were chosen as two of nine incredible pioneering women to receive a $12,500 grant each from Grape-Nuts cereal to use toward their dreams of climbing Mount Everest. Meghan is an aerospace engineer and motivational speaker. She has been overcoming adversity from a young age when she was

diagnosed with dyslexia. Meghan later suffered a lifethreatening snowboarding injury that broke her femur and made doctors think Buchanan may never walk without a cane. However, she has since climbed Kilimanjaro. Sara is the founder of Climb Your Everest, nonprofit supporting marginalized women through leadership programs. She first attempted Everest in 2015 but was forced to

turn back after an earthquake made conditions on the mountain too dangerous. Both women are working toward completing the Explorer’s Grand Slam— climbing the Seven Summits and skiing to the last degrees of the North and South Poles—

and just returned from their climbs of Mount Everest. In honor of Women’s History Month and the brand’s 125th anniversary, Grape-Nuts announced last month that it would donate up to $125,000 to deserving women using GoFundMe to raise money

From Crafton to Harvard: One student’s journey to the Ivy League

By Desert Star Staff Crafton Hills College (CHC) transfer student José Aaron Rosales is packing his bags and heading to Harvard University in the fall. The Rialto resident received the news via email on March 31 while having dinner with family at a Texas Roadhouse. “It was such a hard week after burying my grandmother, and here I am bawling,” the 33-year-old recalled after opening his acceptance letter on his cell phone. “I turned the phone to my wife and showed her what it said. She gave me a big hug. So few people knew I applied because it was not a guarantee I’d get in.” Rosales is a firstgeneration college student, and he credits the height of the COVID-19 pandemic for changing the trajectory of his life. Rosales said the pandemic was “an eye-opener.” “I was limited in what I could do to help without a

medical background,” he said. “So, my wife and I talked about me going back to school.” Rosales connected with two nonprofits dedicated to providing military veterans like him with an accelerated, clear path to college. He decided on CHC after hearing about their high transfer rate. “Lisa Mills, a counselor at the Veterans Resource Center, picked up the phone on the first ring, and that’s how my journey at Crafton started,” Rosales said. Rosales quickly immersed himself in classes focused on his major, Physics, taking as many courses as possible. He knew his next steps would be transferring to a four-year university. Rosales connected with CHC’s Veterans Resource and Transfer Center and the nonprofit Service To School for help. School service is dedicated to supporting service members and veterans looking to accomplish their

next leadership chapter by helping them gain admission to the best college or graduate school possible. Rosales said both resources worked with him to prepare application requirements for consideration. As a result, 954 applicants were accepted into Harvard, and Rosales was one of only 18 veterans. Rosales is preparing to move back east to attend the university with his wife, Christina, and eight-yearold daughter Audreyana. He expects to graduate with the Harvard Class of 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in Physics. After graduation, Rosales plans to attend medical school and give back to the veteran community. “I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family, the nonprofits I worked with, and Crafton,” Rosales said. “It was a team effort.”

Everything You Need to Know About Funding College With Student Loans

By Desert Star Staff While most parents today strongly value higher education, that doesn’t permanently alleviate their sticker shock regarding college-related costs. A new College Ave survey finds that 91% of parents believe a college degree is vital for their child’s future. At the same time, 74% of parents found the cost of college surprisingly high. From having their children kick in -- 46% of parents strongly believe their children should financially contribute to their education

-- to borrowing -- 16% currently or plan to take out private student loans -- many families explore a range of avenues for funding college. “If you’ll be using private student loans to fund college, it’s important to create a budget and do your research,” says Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer at College Ave Student Loans. “Having a plan can help you avoid surprises down the line and reduce the overall cost of your loan.” Here’s what to know: First Things First

“Lets get ready to rumble”

Continued from Page 1 he didn’t see the tap right away, he (the referee) looked at her, and her arm was done; she didn’t deny it.” Orozco is 18 years old and trains out of Kihon www.desertstarweekly.com

Before even considering private student loans, Colatriano notes that applying for scholarships is essential and filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at FAFSA.gov to determine your child’s eligibility for specific scholarships, grants, workstudy, and federal student loans. You should also explore cost-saving housing options and ways to spend less on school supplies, such as buying used textbooks. Shopping Around If federal student loans don’t cover your remaining costs, shop around to find the right private student loan, advises Colatriano. Here are four factors to consider when comparing loan options: 1. Competitive rates: Securing a lower interest rate can help you land lower monthly payments and pay less interest over the life of your loan. To get a sense of the overall cost of the loan and your monthly loan

payments, use the student loan calculator at CollegeAve.com. 2. Flexible loan terms: Find a student loan with various repayment options. Some lenders, like College Ave, let you choose how long you want to repay your loan and whether to start making payments right away or defer until after graduation. The important thing is to select a loan with terms that fit your budget. 3. Fees: Private student loans don’t typically have origination fees, but you should still take the time to check. You should also make sure your loans don’t have any prepayment penalties. 4. Positive company reviews: Only work with a reputable, honest company. Check the Better Business Bureau for accreditation, read reviews to learn about customer experiences, and see each company’s customer ratings. Taking out a Loan Wondering how much to borrow? “A good rule of

thumb is to figure out your student’s expected annual salary after graduation and then try to keep your total borrowing below that amount,” says Colatriano. “For parents with strong credit who want to take on the debt alone, parent loans can be a good choice.” For competitive rates, flexible loan terms and excellent customer service, check out specialists in the industry with College Ave Student Loans. The lender offers private student and parent loans, and its simple 3-minute application can quickly determine your eligibility, helping your family breathe easily from day one of the processes. To learn more and for additional resources, visit collegeave.com. Bottom line? Being a strategic borrower and finding an easy loan experience can help your family get on with what matters most: preparing for a bright future

5 Road Ready Tips to Ride Motorcycles Safely and Comfortably A

FAMILY FEATURES

warm day on the open road is a dream opportunity for riders, whether it’s a longer trip or a quick jaunt through town. Regardless of the adventure, and no matter what you ride, a thrilling ride is a safe ride. Whether you’re new to the open road or a seasoned veteran, remember to follow best practices for safe riding like those outlined in the Responsible Rider program from BRP, makers of Can-Am 3-wheel vehicles. The program prioritizes being an attentive rider and always considering safety, the environment and riding etiquette from highways to city streets and everywhere in-between. As a rider, you are part of a global community and a steward of the open road. To keep your ride safe and comfortable, consider these additional tips:

Wear the Right Gear

While your fashion statement is largely a matter of personal preference, there are some safety items designed to protect your health and well-being that should be worn. Protective riding gear helps keep you safe while enjoying the open road. Full-hand gloves, riding boots that cover ankles, pants and jackets help protect against wind, sun, cold, heat and flying objects such as bugs or rocks. Drivers and passengers should also wear an approved helmet and eye protection to prevent injuries to the head, brain and eyes.

Choose a Proper Helmet

Every rider should wear a helmet, and the abundance of options available can make it tough to decide what’s best. Start by looking for a DOT Certification sticker, which means the helmet meets the strict safety standards of the Department of Transportation. n

Full Face: This style of helmet provides protection for the head and neck with a fixed chin that helps absorb impact. Simply slip it on and adjust the visor.

n

Open Face: Helmets like the Can-Am N21 are usually worn with goggles or a small integrated shield. This option provides ultimate freedom on the road.

n

Crossover: These helmets are easy to personalize based on ride intensity and weather conditions. Crossover helmets can be configured in numerous ways by transforming from full face to jet, which keep it breezy with a full field of view.

Maintain Your Hairdo

Keep hair out of your face. If you have longer hair, choose a hairstyle that’s high and away from your eyes like a low bun, simple braid or ponytail. Secure hair at the nape of your neck and, when possible, wear a neck gaiter around the back of your head and across your nose to keep loose hairs secured. Bonus tip: Keep a compact brush on your ride so you can brush your hair upon arrival at your destination.

Prepare Appropriately for Riding Conditions

Weather is unpredictable, and you should be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Regardless of the forecast, always make a plan for unforeseen conditions like wind and rain. An easy way to stay prepared is to keep a small packable jacket on your ride so you’re never left without an extra layer.

Cooler conditions call for warm yet lightweight gear such as a base layer with additional light layers over the top like a jacket or thin vest. Hotter days require vented clothing that allows airflow to keep you cool and dry.

Consider Your Passenger’s Safety

The most important rule for packing a passenger is ensuring your bike has a specific seat intended for a second rider. Be aware of how the added weight can affect the handling and behavior of the vehicle. Generally, riding with a passenger requires more gradual riding from acceleration and braking to steering. Instruct your passenger how you prefer him or her to ride with you to ensure the most enjoyment possible. Find more responsible riding tips at can-am.brp.com.

Expert Advice for Families Exploring Plant-Based Options A

growing number of families are interested in plant-based choices for themselves and their children. For parents, that means introducing foods thoughtfully to ensure kids are getting maximum nutrition, including plant-based protein. Today’s plant-based eaters span a wide spectrum, from flexitarians, who only occasionally eat meat or fish, to vegans, who avoid consuming animalbased products at all. According to a Food Industry Association report, 81% of households with children include plant-based protein in meals and 40% of parents with children under 18 are incorporating more plant-based foods into their families’ diets. “With a new generation of parents, we see changing food values and an increased interest to incorporate more plant-based meals into diets,” said Dr. Whitney Casares, Gerber’s pediatric medical consultant and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “It can be challenging to find plant-based protein options that are appropriate for young eaters, and it can definitely be more work for families. Parents are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about how food choices influence overall health – not just for themselves, but their kids, too.” If you’re looking for ideas to help you feed your child in line with your own plant-based food values, consider these tips from the experts at Gerber: Incorporate plenty of color. Be sure you’re feeding your little one a rainbow of color representing a variety of foods, including whole grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, meats and fish. Offering your toddler lots of colorful foods makes it appealing to the eyes, but all those colors also represent diverse nutrients for healthy growth and development. Layer legumes with other ingredients. Give meals an added protein punch by incorporating mild-flavored beans with other, stronger flavors like berries. For example, Gerber Plant-tastic Organic Pouch Banana Berry & Veggie Smash with Oats is made with banana, berries, spinach, purple carrots, chickpeas and oats with 2 grams of plant protein and a full serving of fruits and vegetables.

Remember dessert counts, too. You may not think desserts and nutrition fit together, but you can actually pour some good-foryou goodness into special occasions. Think berries, bananas and other naturally sweet ingredients for sorbets and smoothies, and keep in mind there are plenty of dessertfriendly ways to incorporate extra protein, such as nut butters or Greek yogurt.

Keep serving favorites. Offering new foods along with familiar favorites can help young children accept the new foods. It can take up to 10 times for baby to accept a new food, according to Casares, so don’t give up. Eating a variety of familiar foods and new additions throughout the week can also help little ones accept diverse options more readily.

Prep for easy access. Just like adults, kids are likely to nibble on what’s easy. Keep plantbased options readily available and prepared so they’re the first options little ones reach for when they’re hungry. Choosing healthy, plantbased options is easy if that’s what’s available.

Plan nutritious snacks. Meals aren’t the only time to focus on good nutrition. Smart snacks that are developmentally and nutritionally appropriate play an important role in your toddler’s overall diet. Options like Gerber Organic Planttastic Lil’ Crunchies White Bean Hummus Baked Snacks have a mild flavor that appeal to little taste buds while providing 2 grams of protein in each serving.
