Lucknow (India) - Another heinous act of violence against women in India causes horror: Two sisters (15 and 17) were raped, murdered, and hung from a tree.
Six men were arrested in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. They lured the girls into a field, sexually abused them, and strangled them, local police chief Sanjiv Suman said.
The police investigation came after the girls' families claimed they had been kidnapped and raped.
Incomprehensible! To cover up their heinous act, the perpetrators wanted to make the girls' deaths look like suicide. That's why they hung the two from a tree; police chief Suman told Indian television station NDTV.
Prime suspect shot by police
One of the main suspects lives near the girls. He was wounded in the leg in a shootout with police before his arrest.
The bodies underwent an autopsy, police said. The sisters belong to the Dalit community, the lowest level in the Hindu caste system. The Dalits are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. Numerous local people protested against the acts of violence and demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators.
Violent crimes against women are common in India. Here, demonstrators protest against the government's waiver of penalties for several rapists.
Crime and violence against women are widespread in India. In 2021 alone, almost 32,000 rapes were officially registered. However, it can be assumed that many cases are not reported and that the number of unreported instances is much higher.
