For more than two weeks, the police, the FBI, and countless volunteers had searched for the girl in an unprecedented operation. Finally, an autopsy confirmed on Tuesday that Kiely was the dead man from the reservoir.

Helpers searched desperately for Kiely for days.

Kiely was last seen alive on August 6 at a party at a campground at Prosser Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest, about 160 miles northeast of San Francisco.

What happened?

What happened on the way home to Truckee, just a few minutes drive away?

Twenty thousand hours of search, 2,000 leads: Kiely's disappearance had sparked a massive two-week investigation that involved several law enforcement agencies, including diving teams who searched the reservoir underwater.

Then on Sunday, the creepy find: volunteer searchers from a sonar-equipped troupe called "Adventures with Purpose" found Rodni's car upside down in the lake about 16 meters from the shore and about four meters deep.

When the divers discovered the body in the car, they immediately informed Kiely's family and the police. The girl's father and grandfather were there "within a few minutes."

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office has not yet released any further details. "This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time," a Facebook post said. However, officials also said that the fact that they could not rule out kidnapping as a possible reason for Kiely's disappearance may have helped garner more support from various authorities, according to investigators.

Police are still in contact with Kiely's family. But, she explained on Monday: "As we accept this grief under the shadow of death, the rising sun shines upon us, reminding us not to mourn our loss, but to celebrate Kiely's spirit.
