The witness questioning in the Johnny Depp (58) trial against Amber Heard (36) has ended.
The closing arguments will be presented on Friday. The jury left the courthouse in a good mood and laughing.
A verdict is not expected until next week, as there will be no jury deliberations on the weekend and Monday (Memorial Day)
Amber Heard spoke of threats and harassment.
Amber Heard took the witness stand. The actress has filed a counterclaim against her ex-husband. This also alleges defamation, based on three testimonies by one of the actor's lawyers, Adam Waldman, published in articles in the Daily Mail Online in 2020.
Heard was asked by her attorney, Ben Rottenborn, how she was affected by the comments. Visibly battered and trembling, she tells:
“I am harassed, humiliated, threatened every day. Even if I walk into this courtroom and sit here in front of the whole world and the worst parts of my life, things that I've been through, are used to humiliate me."
Heard continued: "People have even threatened me that they want to kill my baby in the microwave!"
She tells how much she suffers every day because of her experiences; she had to set rules – about how people touch her and talk to her because small things can trigger them. A fight scene in a movie could lead to a mental breakdown.
Heard's crack at Depp: "I'm not sitting in this courtroom giggling. I'm not sitting in this courtroom laughing, smiling and making snide jokes. I do not do that."
Depp's lawyer is hard-hitting.
When asked why the case was complex for her, Depp's attorney, Camille Vasquez, explained that Heard's "lies have been exposed multiple times in the world, right?" "I didn't lie about anything I wanted to say here," Heard said.
Then Heard was confronted with some of the statements she had made. Vasquez explained that Heard's witness and former best friend Rocky Pennington did not corroborate the actress' claim that Depp grabbed a woman's wrist out of jealousy. Vasquez accused Heard that she was the jealous one. Heard stated that was wrong.
The trailer park manager where they were staying also said on Monday that they had not observed anything.
Heard countered that this man "wasn't there" and certainly didn't know what happened behind closed doors.
Depp's attorney also shared a recording said to have been taken when Heard issued a restraining order against Depp. Heard and her friend Rocky Pennington laugh and look happy in the photo.
The US magazine TMZ had then sent photographers to the court. A photo of Amber Heard with a bruise appeared earlier. Nothing can be seen in the picture with Rocky the day after the picture was taken. Heard said she didn't know when it was recorded.
The attorney then presented a news article dated May 30, 2016, which said the photo was of Heard the day after the restraining order was filed.
There was also the question of who tipped TMZ that Amber would be there. The actress explained she had "no idea" the press would be outside the courthouse. On the other hand, Attorney Vazquez accused Heard of notifying the press herself.
Amber explained: "No way. Why would I want that? What domestic violence survivor wants that?”
Warning message from the judge
Judge Penney Azcarate also issued a warning.
In the hall, Johnny Depp fans have laughed again and again in recent weeks, especially at statements by Amber Heard.
"If I hear another noise, I will clear the gallery, and we will continue this testimony without anyone in the courtroom. Roger that? Good."
On Wednesday, Kate Moss (48) was THE Joker of the Depp lawyers. Depp's famous model ex gave Amber the lie by testifying under oath, "Johnny never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down a flight of stairs." Heard had previously claimed this to prove Johnny Depp is aggressive, violent, and doesn't flinch.
On the other hand, Johnny Depp admitted that there were often arguments in their relationship. "But I never got to the point of hitting Miss Heard in any way, nor have I ever hit a woman in my life," he said under oath.
In the courtroom, the ex-husbands sit just a few meters apart. Depp avoids all eye contact with Amber Heard while contempt is written all over her face.
Does the hand surgeon think Amber's testimony about the fingertip incident is likely?
As the first witness, Dr. Richard Gilbert’s orthopedic surgeon was called to the witness stand.
He is set to offer his opinion on Johnny's severed fingertip, which he lost in a much-discussed argument with Amber Heard in March 2015 while filming Australia in the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp accused Heard of the injury resulting from a vodka bottle thrown at him. She, on the other hand, said he self-inflicted the wound.
The surgeon specializing in hand surgery believes more in Depp's version. He considers Amber's testimony to be "implausible.”
Dr. Richard Gilbert in court: "I certainly believe that a vodka bottle thrown from a distance has more than enough force to cause this fracture and loss of soft tissue."
Did the Depp-Ex edit evidence photos? That's what the computer forensic scientist says.
Next, Computer Forensics Investigator Julian Ackert testified as a rebuttal witness for Heard's team.
He commented on the testimony of Bryan Neumeister, another digital forensics expert, who testified for Johnny Depp's team on Wednesday.
Ackert explained that for all but one of the photos analyzed by Neumeister, he found that the original versions of the images did not show in their "Exit metadata" that they had gone through editing software.
The specific photos he reviewed were authentic, the expert said.
Ackert was then shown two versions of the same photo, also offered to Neumeister in court on Wednesday, and agreed that "they look visually different.” But added that based on the photo metadata he checked, he had no reason to question the authenticity of the photos.
Psychologist testifies in Heard's favor.
Clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Dawn Hughes returned to the witness stand for a second time on Wednesday to testify to Dr. refute Shannon Curry.
Both psychologists had evaluated Heard before the trial began.
Dr. Hughes diagnosed the actress as suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
On the other hand, Curry said Heard had "histrionic and borderline personality disorder" -- with "grossly exaggerated symptoms of PTSD." She also stated that PTSD is "the most commonly spoofed and alleged diagnosis in civil courts."
Hughes vehemently disagreed with Curry's statement that people with PTSD were "virtually non-functional."
According to her, this is a widespread "myth and a misconception.” Hughes stated, "People struggling with trauma and PTSD are powerful, brave and resilient people even when struggling."
