What sad pictures from Mexico!

Hundreds of dead sea turtles have been discovered on a beach in southern Mexico in two months. According to residents, there are indications that they got caught in fishing nets and died. The animals washed ashore in Puerto Arista, Chiapas state.

They had no chance of surviving: The badly injured turtles died in agony and were finally washed up on the beach.

A resident involved in burying countless dead turtles on the beach told the DPA: "Until last week, we counted 338 dead turtles, which is an unusually high number."

Turtles come to Puerto Arista every year to lay their eggs

According to media reports, the National Commission for Conservation Areas confirmed indications of the use of fishing nets, hooks, and fishing gear, which are said to have led to the deaths of the animals.

Thousands of sea turtles arrive yearly at Puerto Arista's beach sanctuary to lay their eggs.

Among the dead animals found are endangered species such as the hawksbill sea turtle and the olive ridley sea turtle

Unfortunately, specimens of the endangered species hawksbill and olive ridley turtles were among the animals that died. According to residents, some animals had been cut open to remove the eggs.
