Ana de Armas plays Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe. The preparations for the film "Blonde" took more than ten years.

Marilyn Monroe (†36) was one of the most legendary but also most tragic actresses in history. However, 60 years after her death, the controversial drama "Blond" has now started on Netflix.

Monroe is played by Ana de Armas (43). The Cuban actress recently starred as a Bond girl, beating out top stars like Jessica Chastain (45) and Naomi Watts (54).

She worked all the more challenging for it, taking nine months of lessons alone with a dialect coach to imitate Monroe's language as best she could.

Marilyn Monroe was the sex symbol of a whole generation.

"That was the most difficult part of my transformation because English is not my native language."

But the effort went much further. "I sat in makeup for three hours every day starting at 4:30 in the morning. Meanwhile, I kept nodding off. But fortunately, most of the makeup was applied with my eyes closed."

Almost more elaborate was the wardrobe. Says De Armas, "We have more than 100 outfit changes in the film. I've never had that many wardrobe fittings."

Slowly, she worked with the costume designer to get the natural Marilyn body shape. "Her breasts, her narrow waist. Little details under the clothes made a big difference in the end."

But important scenes were also recreated down to the last detail, such as her performance of the song "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend."

"We took two days to do that. That was mainly because of the choreography I had to learn. Everything else was an observation, especially with Marilyn's face, because that was very expressive."

At the world premiere of "Blonde" at the Venice Film Festival, Ana de Armas received a 14-minute standing ovation - and is already being talked about as a hot Oscar candidate.

Many Monroe fans are nevertheless very disappointed by the almost three-hour-long film. There were even shitstorms because the cinema icon was mercilessly disenchanted.
